1. Activation Assignments

This is your activation unit. Once all assignments from the activation unit have been submitted and graded, you will be considered a full student in English Language Arts 10. The rest of your units should appear at that time.

To activate, complete the following assignments and submit them to their corresponding dropboxes on the front page of the course.

1. First Peoples Principles of Learning
2. Writing a Paragraph
3. Citation: Stealing First Base

Students will only be able to activate if they achieve passing grades for all these assignments, as they will set the expectations for the rest of the course. Be prepared to make changes, corrections, and alterations to any of them once they have been submitted. Learning in a DL environment comes primarily from feedback.

2. First People's Principles of Learning

Learning Target: Read a Variety of Texts and Demonstrate Comprehension

In this course, you are going to be using the First Peoples Principles of Learning to create reflections/journals on your learning. In each unit, you will be asked to reflect on the assignments you have completed, and think of an example in which you engaged in one (or more) of the First People’s Principles of Learning.

Before beginning, however, you must make sure you are familiar with the First Peoples Principles of Learning.

Task: In a separate document, rewrite each of the above principles using your own words. You may want to describe how each principle contributes to learning, or use an example of a time in which you engaged in the principle. Your goal is to develop your own understanding of each of these principles. You may have to look up words you do not know.

3. Writing a Persuasive Paragraph

Learning Target: Demonstrate the Skill to Communicate your Thoughts

In English 12, you will be asked to write paragraphs to express your understanding of Learning Standards. It's important to have an introductory understanding of how to put these paragraphs together to properly communicate what you want to communicate.

It's also important to understand that expressing an opinion through writing holds itself to different standards than expressing an opinion orally. Persuasive writing is far more structured than a verbal argument.

Assignment: You will write a paragraph in which you express your opinion on a topic. If you can't think of one, choose one of the topics below:

Novels are superior to movies.
It's better to live in the country than the city.
Camping in a tent is more fun than an RV.
Motorcycles are cooler than trucks.
Mac vs. PC
Change is more important than tradition
School uniforms should be mandatory
Flavoured vape cartridges should be illegal.

Step 1: download the Paragraph Outline Guide and review the given example using the topic "Why are food prices so expensive in the north."

Step 2: Come up with an opinion, or choose a stance on one of the ones listed above.

Step 3: Using your answer to step 2, start building a paragraph outline using This Blank Outline

Step 4: Once your outline is complete, use it to create your create your paragraph. You can type your paragraph below your outline, or on a different document.

Step 5: Submit both your outline and your paragraph.

4. Citation: Stealing First Base

Learning Target: Develop Research and Organization Skills

Writers, even professional writers, are not averse to "stealing" or using lines that come from other sources. Usually, a writer acknowledges these sources when they read or publish their work. Interesting things happen when we "lift" words from a source other than our own brain or imagination. Surprising new vocabulary, insights, or ideas can happen in our work.

Instructions:

Step 1: Download and read the guide How to Cite

Step 2: Build a Work Cited (see page 3 in the above guide) using the following 3 sources
