3. Writing a Persuasive Paragraph

Learning Target: Demonstrate the Skill to Communicate your Thoughts

In English 12, you will be asked to write paragraphs to express your understanding of Learning Standards. It's important to have an introductory understanding of how to put these paragraphs together to properly communicate what you want to communicate. 

It's also important to understand that expressing an opinion through writing holds itself to different standards than expressing an opinion orally. Persuasive writing is far more structured than a verbal argument. 

Assignment: You will write a paragraph in which you express your opinion on a topic. If you can't think of one, choose one of the topics below:

  • Novels are superior to movies.
  • It's better to live in the country than the city.
  • Camping in a tent is more fun than an RV.
  • Motorcycles are cooler than trucks.
  • Mac vs. PC
  • Change is more important than tradition
  • School uniforms should be mandatory
  • Flavoured vape cartridges should be illegal. 

Step 1: download the Paragraph Outline Guide and review the given example using the topic "Why are food prices so expensive in the north." 

Step 2: Come up with an opinion, or choose a stance on one of the ones listed above.  

Step 3: Using your answer to step 2, start building a paragraph outline using This Blank Outline

Step 4: Once your outline is complete, use it to create your create your paragraph. You can type your paragraph below your outline, or on a different document.

Step 5: Submit both your outline and your paragraph
